3 Signs of An Achilles Tendon Injury
Your Achilles tendon is the large tendon that connects your heel to your calf muscle, giving you the ability to move your foot. This tendon can become severely stretched or even torn while participating in sports with sharp starts and stops like basketball, football, and tennis. Many injuries to the Achilles tendon can be treated with conservative measures at home, especially if therapy is started right away before a more severe injury has occurred.
An injury to your Achilles tendon is likely to include the following painful symptoms:
Initial symptoms—In the early stage, you will feel mild pain in the back of your leg or above the heel after exercise or sporting activities. The pain often becomes more severe with more prolonged activities and the stiffness and tenderness are often more pronounced upon first arising from sleep.
Difficulty walking and bending your foot—As the injury worsens, you will have difficulty walking and bending your foot properly. Best to rest and have the foot evaluated by your foot doctor to prevent further injury and decrease future complications.
Increased pain when trying to stand on your toes— Standing on your toes will be extremely painful, and may cause further damage to the Achilles tendon.
