Foot Care After a Run

Running and jogging are excellent cardiovascular exercises and help to alleviate stress as well. Getting into a regular exercise program greatly reduces your risk of some cancers and also lowers your chances of developing heart disease, diabetes, or suffering a debilitating stroke by helping to lower your blood pressure and improve your cholesterol profile.

While running has many benefits to your health, it’s very important to take good care of your feet after running to help avoid any injuries and complications. So after cooling down, stretching, and hydrating, take the time to take care of your feet too!

Some tips for pampering your tired feet after a run include the following:

  • Foot soaks—It’s always a relief to soak your swollen, tired feet in a nice, cool foot soak. Add epsom salts for a soothing effect. The coolness will relieve the swelling of your muscles and other tissues, and help to shrink the blood vessels and arteries. Applying ice for 15 minutes is also a great way to reduce inflammation.
  • Blister management—Since blisters can lead to other complications, be sure to catch any signs of blistering early and carefully drain any large blisters by inserting a sterilized needle into the edge of the blister and squeezing out the pus while avoiding breaking the skin. Apply antibiotic ointment and cover with a clean pad.
  • Foot massage—What better way to pamper your feet after a run than to have a foot massage? You can gently roll your feet over a tennis ball or frozen water bottle for a great stress release, or treat yourself to a professional massage or have a friend help.
