4 Tips to Keep Your Feet Happy & Healthy
With the relentless winter finally over, get your feet ready for the warmer weather by trying these awesome tips to help minimize injury and keep your feet healthy and strong throughout the year.
Four tips for healthy and happy feet:
- Strength and flexibility exercises—Exercises to increase flexibility and range of motion are a great way to keep your feet in good shape. Try exercises like picking up marbles with your toes, writing out the alphabet with your toes, rolling your arches over a tennis ball, and doing ankle and calf extensions. Your podiatrist can also recommend other exercises that will hone and strengthen your feet.
- Weight management—Every pound of gained weight has the effect of adding 3 extra pounds of pressure to your feet and ankles. Keeping your weight in the proper range is a big bonus for your feet.
- Proper support—While it’s very important to properly support your main arch, also take into consideration the shallow arch of your forefoot where the ball and metatarsal bones intersect. This often overlooked problem area can benefit from a metatarsal dome support that helps to distribute the pressure over a wider area. When used in combination with a custom fitted arch support, these devices can prevent the dropping and rolling of the arches (overpronation) that creates a variety of foot, ankle, knee and back problems.
- Things to remember when buying new shoes—Remember that your feet tend to flatten and widen as you get older, so get your feet remeasured once a year and always try on new shoes at the end part of the day when your feet have expanded to their maximum size.
